Observations on Germany #12

Posted on ..

This past week I gave my first lecture in German at the LMU. I'd been doing some teaching in seminar format in German too which was a good warm-up. It is a bit frustrating not to have effortless command of the language when doing philosophy, since so much depends on choosing exactly the right words. But it seemed to go all right (I was talking about the history of the concept of unity in the Platonic tradition). Actually harder than the German may be having to lecture for almost 2 hours, which is standard here -- in the UK it was one hour which taxes everyone's attention span less!
