Observations on Germany #4

Posted on ..

I read once that Germans consume more bread per person than any other European. And this seems to be true -- our local bakery has a line out the door on weekends and a long line inside every morning. The bread is staggeringly good; a German baker could make a killing by serving this stuff in central London. One thing I hadn't realized in my time here before is how much they love honey. Today at our local supermarket I saw that the honey section stretched about 9 meters, with 7 shelves -- that's 63 meters of jars of honey for sale.

So, while I don't have any evidence for this, I'm guessing that bread with honey (Honigbrot) may be the most common snack here. Unless beer counts as a snack.
