Bluesky

Since Twitter is being run into the ground by Elon Musk and he is a repugnant individual with whom one should have nothing to do if one can help it, I have set up an account on the (functionally equivalent) Bluesky:

Please follow me there! Since I have so many followers on Twitter I'll stay on both for now, but I tend to assume that Twitter will not survive under its current leadership, so when it folds you'll know where to find me.

Bluesky

There is a small problem though. Unless you have a bluesky account, you can't view anything on bluesky. This doesn't seem better than twitter. Maybe worse even, since if you have no one to invite you, then you have to wait a while to get access!

Bluesky

Yes I agree that is a drawback but it seems pretty possible to get invites: https://www.wikihow.com/Bluesky-Invite-Code

And I think it will open up before too long as people stampede over from Twitter. In any case Twitter is obviously doomed, unless Musk sells it to someone rational, so I figured it was time to start exploring a plan B while I can still coax people over from Twitter and it seems like the philosophy social media community has settled on Bluesky (there are a lot of the same most active philosophers over there already, as I have discovered).

What about Mastodon, the suggestion I made if you remember that?

Mastodon

Yes that was the other option! I am not really sure which is better but as I say, a lot of philosophers seem to have chosen Bluesky. Of course ultimately I want to use social media to stay in touch with my whole audience, not just other (academic) philosophers. But I also like the fact that Bluesky is more or less exactly Twitter in terms of functionality, so it is familiar to me. And I don't really want to be on three of these simultaneously. Actually I really liked Twitter more or less fine - I know a lot of it is a cesspool but my corner of it was nice. It's just Musk that makes it untenable.

Well, I guess the choice was made for you if philosophers are indeed on bluesky. But at least with mastodon, you can view content even without an account.

Guess I will just have to wait to be invited in. Heard the queue can take months though, as it says in your wikihow article.
